FGM Survivor Provides Lifeline in Leeds Community

From surviving FGM and forced marriage in Guinea to becoming a powerful advocate for girls' rights in Leeds, Hawa Bah's journey exemplifies resilience, courage, and the transformative power of education.
A Journey of Survival
Hawa Bah's story begins in Guinea, where she experienced the trauma of Female Genital Mutilation at a young age and faced the prospect of forced marriage. Despite these challenges, her determination to create a different future for herself and other girls never wavered.
"I knew that education was my pathway to freedom," Hawa reflects. "Every girl deserves the right to choose her own future, to pursue her dreams, and to live free from harm."
Building a New Life in Leeds
After arriving in the UK, Hawa settled in Leeds where she began rebuilding her life. She pursued education, learned English, and gradually became involved in community work. Her personal experiences gave her unique insights into the challenges faced by immigrant families and young girls at risk.
Recognizing the need for culturally sensitive support services, Hawa founded Hawadal Peace of Mind to provide a lifeline for girls and families facing similar challenges to those she had overcome.
Creating Change Through Advocacy
Today, Hawa's organization serves as a beacon of hope for vulnerable girls and their families. Through education programs, community workshops, and direct support services, Hawadal Peace of Mind addresses the root causes of harmful practices while empowering girls to pursue their dreams.
"When I see a young girl walking to school with her books, knowing she's safe and has choices, that's when I know our work is making a difference. Every girl we help is a victory against the forces that tried to silence us."— Hawa Bah, Founder of Hawadal Peace of Mind
Impact in the Community
Under Hawa's leadership, Hawadal Peace of Mind has become a trusted resource in Leeds' diverse communities. The organization works closely with schools, healthcare providers, and social services to identify and support at-risk girls while educating families about the importance of girls' education and rights.
The organization's holistic approach includes providing school supplies, mentoring programs, family counseling, and emergency support for girls facing immediate danger. This comprehensive model has proven effective in creating lasting change at both individual and community levels.
Recognition and Awards
Hawa's tireless advocacy work has not gone unnoticed. In 2024, Hawadal Peace of Mind received both The Jo Cox Award and the Health and Wellbeing Project of The Year Award, recognizing the organization's outstanding contribution to making Leeds a better place for all residents.
